How to choose the right modality ?

How to choose the right modality for you.

First we need to understand a little about why, as we age our skin loses its firmness and elasticity, causing it to sag.

Collagen is vital for skin elasticity, but it has a much bigger role to play. Collagen occurs throughout the body, in the skin, bones, and connective tissues. It is the most abundant protein found in humans, it’s what holds the body together, giving the body tissues structure, toughness, rigidity, and texture.

Collagen helps form a fibrous network of cells called fibroblasts in the dermis layer and this allows new cells to grow. It also plays a role in replacing and restoring dead skin cells.

When we reach the age of 25, the collagen production in our body starts to slow and can drop by as much as 2% every year. Of course lifestyle and genetics play a part in how quickly collagen production decreases. The decrease in collagen causes the structural integrity of the skin to decline, causing loss of firmness and elasticity resulting in wrinkles and saggy skin.

The skin is made up of three layers

  1. Epidermis – the outer layer : contains pigments
  2. Dermis – middle layer : contains collagen and elastin
  3. Hypodermis – (also called subcutaneous tissue) lowest layer : has a protective layer of fat and serves to connect the skin to the fascia of the bones and muscles.

The muscles are beneath the hypodermis.

As we age the changes that occur in our skin happen in the Dermis (middle layer) where the collagen and elastin are produced. The decrease in collagen and elastin can cause dehydration and this can cause drooping and loss of elasticity .

In the deeper layers we can lose fat and our bones can also become thinner. After menopause the sebaceous glands in the hypodermic produce less oil which can increase dryness.

Now that we know a little about the layers of the skin it’s time to work out how to choose the best modality.

HIFU delivers a precise High Intensity Focused Ultrasound waves. The ultrasound energy goes deep below the surface of the skin where it is able to reach the SMAS layer (muscle layer), heating the cells and enabling the stimulation of collagen fibres without harming the outer layer of the skin. Being able to reach the SMAS layer leads to a tightening of the skins elasticity and firmness.

HIFU is great for sagging skin as it tightens loose skin under the chin, jowls and brows.

Radiofrequency uses low radio frequency waves to deliver heat deep into the dermis. This stimulates Fibroblasts to create and repair collagen and elastin.

RF is ideal for facial rejuvenation. If you are losing facial volume RF may be the better option. It can improve fine lines and wrinkles and improve overall skin texture.

HIFU reaches the SMAS layer

RF reaches the epidermal layers and does not go deeper

Microcurrent is not a new technology, in fact it has been around for decades. It was first developed in the 1960’s in conjunction with other treatments for patients with Bell’s Palsy. Later when it was realised the treatment showed effective results in patients with atrophied muscles, microcurrent became a revolutionary anti-ageing tool within the beauty industry.

Microcurrent treatments are safe, effective and painless. Microcurrent is a very low electrical current that stimulates the muscle, stimulates ATP (adenosine triphosphate) cell growth, and increases the production of collagen and elastin. These currents are gentle waves which flow through the skin and down to the facial muscle to contour, lift, tone, and reduce wrinkles.

Both EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) and Microcurrent are types of electrotherapy however, EMS provides deeper muscle stimulation. The electrical currents are stronger those used in microcurrent, and these stronger currents cause the muscle to contract. EMS is ideal for the lower face such as jowls, under the chin, and neck.

It’s just like going to the gym and working out, only it’s a workout for your face.

LED Light Therapy

LED Light Therapy (Light Emitting Diode) uses targeted light energy to trigger your body’s natural cell processes to rejuvenate and repair the skin. The light energy targets the mitochondria in your cells simulation the production of collagen and elastin.

LED light therapy is clinically proven and safe for all skin types. It helps with a variety of skin concerns such as: lines &wrinkles, rosacea, psoriasis, acne, eczema, sun damage, reducing pores. LED light therapy can be combined with other treatments such as: Medical and cosmetic needling, PRP therapy, cosmetic injectables.

The Mojia Audora LED Light Therapy Mask has four different wavelengths and these wavelengths are represented by colours, each colour penetrates the skin at different depths.

NIR – Many of the benefits are the same as red LED however, NIR has longer wavelengths that penetrate deep into the skin providing additional benefits for cellular regeneration and even muscle and joint pain relief.

RED – Regenerates skin cells. Stimulates collagen, improves blood circulation and helps reduces fine lines and wrinkles.

BLUE – Treats acne by targeting the bacteria that live on the skin, inhibits sebaceous glands,

YELLOW – Boosts lymphatic flow, skin cell rejuventation, collagen production, reduces redness, helps increase wound healing.

HIFU – ultrasonic waves to heat up deeper to the SMAS – promoting collagen production – tighten skin –  reduces enlarged pores – ideal for the lower face – better option for treating deeper lines and wrinkles.

RF –  radio waves to heat up cells to the dermis – promoting collagen production – tighten skin – treats fine line and wrinkles – treats enlarged pores

Microcurrent – delivers tiny electrical currents to tighten the muscles – promoting collagen production –  increased ATP – tighten muscle

EMS  –provides deeper muscle stimulation. The electrical currents are stronger and cause the muscle to contract. Ideal for the lower face such as jowls, under the chin, and neck.

If your main concern is –

Sagging and your goal is to ‘lift’ then HIFU may be the better option. Hifu gives better results for tightening loose skin such as under the chin, and jowls.

If you have no or limited laxity, RF may be the better option. It will tighten the skin and create the effect of more volume.

Both HIFU and RF simulate collagen production and are effective in treating fine lines and wrinkles.

Both complement EMS and Microcurrent

You can also use EMS and Microcurrent together, using EMS first in your treatment.

LED Light Therapy for overall skin rejuvenation treating a variety of skin concerns. LED light therapy can be combined with all the above treatments.
